Summary:
The Battery Compliance Lead is responsible for understanding and evaluating the current and evolving regulatory landscape for high voltage batteries and providing guidance to VWGoA business units in the development of standards and programs to assure compliance with all relevant obligations.
This includes - but is not limited to - assessing and auditing business unit approaches to packaging, transportation, storage, handling, testing, charging, and disposal (including recycling and/or 2nd-life solutions).
Where appropriate, the Battery Compliance Lead also supports VWGoA business units in the investigation of common national or regional solutions/programs to gain efficiencies and improvements in terms of cost and performance.
The Battery Compliance Lead reports directly to the Sr.
Director, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS).
Job
Responsibilities:
Main responsibility - 100% Provide regulatory guidance and technical support to VWGoA business units and personnel (including manufacturing and parts logistics) on high voltage (eg lithium-ion) battery topics across the life cycle.
Coordinate with EHS legal counsel on current and emerging compliance obligations, as well as incident prevention, preparedness, and response and remediation efforts, where applicable.
Monitor emerging legislation, regulation, industry standards, and stakeholder expectations.
Promote implementation of lessons learned and best practices across business units and subsidiaries.
Assure the integration of high voltage battery topics into VWGoA's environmental and safety management systems, including:
identification of compliance obligations; operational risk assessment; incident reporting; corrective action tracking; internal and external communications (as applicable); training; KPIs and reporting.
Support the EHS audit program including actively participating in/conducting compliance audits.
Prepare and submit relevant reporting on battery compliance matters to internal stakeholders, as needed (eg, support the Sr.
Director, EHS in reporting obligations to the VWGoA Board, VW Group, etc.
) Prepare and submit relevant reporting on battery compliance matters to external stakeholders including regulatory authorities in support of business unit legal/regulatory requirements Represent the company in relevant industry and technical associations.
Liaise with and support VW Group on battery matters (eg, Group requirements/policies, emerging regulations, global shared services) Perform other roles and duties as needed and directed by the Sr.

Experience:
At least 10 years total work experience; 5 years EHS-related regulatory experience including specialized knowledge of lithium-ion battery topicsRequired Education:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or related technical field.
Desired Education:
Masters in related Engineering or EHS technical field (but not required)Required Skills:
Excellent understanding of environmental, health and safety requirements (eg, EPCRA, RCRA, CERCLA, Hazard Communication Standard, General Duty Clause) as well as hazmat/dangerous goods requirements (DOT HMR, IATA, IMDG) Demonstrated experience writing policies, procedures, and guidance to meet regulatory requirements Familiarity with industry standards relevant to handling, managing, and testing lithium-ion batteries (SAE, UL, NFPA) Familiarity with industry standards relevant to electrical safety (NFPA 70E) Demonstrated experience conducting hazard assessments as well as the ability to identify environmental risks and propose solutions Experience interfacing with various business units on environmental management and compliance requirementsDesired Skills:
Knowledge of Li-ion battery production and sub-assembly processes and associated safety and environmental risks and obligations Familiarity with International Building and Fire Code Working knowledge of OSHA legal/regulatory requirements and programs Knowledge of Volkswagen Group organization, policies, and processes (not mandatory)Work Flexibility:
